The start of the EU Parliament session is not an event which
is given massively extensive coverage in the UK. It’s noted that it has
happened, anything out of the ordinary is given some level of coverage before
the media move swiftly onto something else. That is until the people Britain
elects to represent them turn up and act like utter fools.
I know the Brexit party stands for one thing and one thing
only. They hate the EU and want the UK to leave, but they chose to stand for
election for the position of MEPs. They chose to go to the EU parliament. They
are supposed to represent the people of the UK, both those that voted for them
as well as those that didn’t. So, can someone tell me what they fuck they think
they are playing at? Turning their backs on the Ode to Joy, what possible
purpose does that solve? I know they see it as a protest, but protest of what
exactly? The members are all elected, and the higher positions agreed within
the scope of the defined rules, so democracy in action. The EU Parliament didn’t
vote down the withdrawal deal, UK MPs looking out the good of the country did
that. So what exactly are they protesting?
Stunts, and it was nothing more than a stunt, of this nature
achieve nothing other than making them look like fools. Yes, they got their 5
minutes of press coverage in which they were either slated or made fun of. But
why would anyone take them seriously? If they have no wish to be there, no wish
to represent the best interests of the UK, then why go? If they don’t intend to
take part, then don’t turn up. Don’t claim the cash they get for turning up.
Don’t claim the expenses that they will, and oh boy they will, every last
little penny these money-grubbing fuckers can get their hands on, they will.
Even after the UK leaves, if the UK leaves (please, for the
love of every power I don’t believe in, can someone cancel this fucking mess?),
we still must negotiate with these elected officials, so why try to piss them
off. The short sightedness of the Brexit Party is mindboggling. Trade deals,
extradition treaties, visa applications, joint security efforts, climate change
schemes and even space exploration, all these things still need to be worked
out. The UK cannot just go it alone. It is not the big slavery ridden, raping,
thieving, murdering, empire it once was and thank fuck it isn’t.
But it wasn’t just the turning of their backs they got up
to. Ann Widdecombe, the supposed feather in Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party’s cap.
Her maiden speech to the EU Parliament was nothing short of reprehensible. The
language used, the hatred displayed, the complete lack of respect for what the
body has been able to achieve. Yes, the EU has its flaws, what large
organisation doesn’t? But it has managed to keep the peace on a continent that
has seen two World Wars in less than 50 years. It has drawn together
co-operation and trade agreements with every member. Does this benefit all
members equally? Arguably not, but it has benefited them all to some degree.

Ann’s speech drew comparisons between the UK leaving the EU
and slaves and peasants revolting against their oppressors. No matter what you
might think the EU has or hasn’t done to the UK that comparison is ridiculous,
disgraceful, hateful and not worthy of an elect representative of the UK. You
might think that the EU is undemocratic, but it is not and has never been the
British Empire trading slaves around the world, imposing disgusting, backwards laws
upon indigenous populations and invading lands that don’t belong to them. Countries
vote to join EU and Article 50 gives them a way to leave if they choose. Both
votes should be taken with full, or as close to full as possible, knowledge of
the repercussions. Informed consent is something that is at the core of any
democracy. Know your choices, the impacts of those choices and leave lies out
of it.
Why now would anyone within the EU want to deal with Ann?
And if no one is willing to speak with her then how does she do her job? How
does she represent her constituents while the UK remains a member of the EU?
Her warped and twisted view of EU leaves little doubt that she is not capable of
fulfilling her duties and as such should be asked to leave. If that speech had
been made in the UK House of Commons the opposition parties would have been
calling for her head and rightly so.
On a minor point I would also like to say that her claim
that “we are going and we are glad to be going”, well may she and her Brexit
Party cronies are but I’m not and I know many others that are not. So keep your
unwelcome comparisons to yourself and don’t claim to speak for the whole of the
UK because I can tell you, the Brexit Party and especially you, don’t speak for
me.
But it was not only the Brexit Party that decided to pull a
stunt. The Lib Dem MEPs decided to wear bright yellow t-shirts with the slogan Bollocks
to Brexit written on the back. OK while I very much share the sentiment, remember
where you are. Remember what you job is. If I turned up my workplace wearing
that sort of thing, I would be sent home and probably given a disciplinary and
rightly so. You are an elected official in Parliament. Wear the t-shirt outside
if you want. But while you are at work, wear appropriate attire. Don’t act like
the class clown, the Brexit Party is doing that well enough for everyone.

It might sound like I am against free speech with a post
like this. Nothing could be further from the truth. I hope these Lib Dem MEPs
are attending rallies and making speeches aimed at cancelling Brexit. But when
you are at work dress and act in a manner befitting the position you are in.
Leave the stupidity outside and get the job done in the right way.
