Well that cleared everything up didn't it…. OK maybe not.
To start with it was the wrong format. The BBC claimed there was not enough time to pull a representative audience together. Weird as Channel 4, an organisation with less resources, managed to do it with even less time. It also needed to be longer and the candidates needed to show a little decorum or at least be put in their place more. I got the feeling they wouldn't have tried to talk over a male presenter as much, and that is not a dig at Emily Maitlis, who I felt did very well, it is a reflection of the candidates lack of respect for a female presenter trying to do her job. Makes you wonder how they would react when speaking with Angela Merkel, Jacinda Ardern, Erna Solberg or any of the many other female heads of state. Feels like an embarrassment for the UK just waiting to happen.
The questions chosen were good, reasonably broad and straight to the point. It was great to see Emily then go back to the person asking the question to see if they got the answer they were looking for. Just a shame every single one of them said no. It really shows the state of British politics when not a single question is answered in any form of satisfactory way.
The whole point of this was to show off the candidate’s policies and credentials for job of Prime Minister. Not a single one stood out. Johnson waffled and denied ever saying anything offensive, with a straight face! Gove constantly took the opportunity to state he had a "detailed plan" for everything yet still wasn't able to answer a question. Stewart was more interested in looking like a man of the people by sitting on the edge of his seat so his feet touched the floor and removing his tie for some reason. Cunt, sorry Hunt (my bad) was pretty much nowhere to be seen and Javid had nothing to say about anything yet still managed to talk shit.
These people are meant to lead us to a glorious new future out of the EU. They couldn't even impress the 15 year old ask them to help save the world by putting some policies in place! Erin summed it up brilliantly by saying "None of you have impressed me".
Earlier in the day Raab was knocked out in the latest round of voting. He was probably one of the scarier choices so I must admit I am glad he is gone. His anti-democratic stances made me very nervous. At the same time each of the candidates picked up a few more votes since the last round. I suppose the biggest surprise was the jump in support for Stewart while Javid only managed to scrape through with the 33 votes required.
So what next? Well more voting tomorrow and probably Thursday to narrow it down to a final two. Johnson is almost certainly through, but who is going with him? It seems too close to call. I don’t think Javid will survive the next round and his supporters may just find Stewart as the place to then put votes as the alternative candidate. That would put him in a position to challenge Gove how would probably go out in the following round. I think it then comes down to where Gove’s backers place their vote. That, for me, will be the key. Do they back Hunt or Stewart?
However this plays out…..plays out, even just typing that makes me cringe. This isn’t a game, this is people’s livelihoods and lives at stake here, but to these overly ambitious fools a game is exactly how they see it. Who do I have to trade with or promise positions too, to get the votes I need? What bullshit do I have to spout to the public to get the party backing? I bet not once have any of them really thought, how do I reduce child poverty, domestic abuse levels, cancer waiting times or really bring about a reduction in pollution? There is so much pain and hurt in this world that a good leader could help alleviate but all they care about is being top of a really shitty pile.
Anyway like I was saying, however this plays out it the clock is still ticking and the threat of a no-deal Brexit is not going anywhere. God, Gods, or whatever higher power you believe in or not, help us all and save us from scheming Tories.
